Wieliczka, Poland July 1- part 1

Today we went to Wieliczka to see the salt mine we saw on the internet.  Someone sent us a link and it got us hooked.

Salt has been mined here for millennia.  They used to mine the salt, which was worth more than silver.  The miners were allowed to take home, once a month,  38-39 kilos of salt that they could sell.  Therefore, miners were wealthy and the job was coveted.

Nowadays, salt is not mined but scraped.  The salt forms crystals where water seeps through the rock (salt also).  When we started our tour we were told we could taste the walls, or floors or ceilings, if we liked. Just limit it to 5 kilos each.  The walls are made of salt and taste like it.  In some places you see the salt crystals and at others you can see clear solid salt.

Salt has healing properties and does not allow bacteria to grow, so the air down here is pure.  That is why there is a sanatorium for asthma suffers.

There are 7 levels of tunnels and innumerable miles.
