On the way to Linz, guess what we saw. When we get to Linz we will drop off almost all the passengers, who are going on excursions. Just 4 of us will remain on board. Expect more castles.
So we dumped the passengers and sailed out on our private yacht, or so it seemed. The 4 of us had a private lunch. Wonderful service. We could get used to this.
We sailed to Passau, Germany. While we waited for the rest of the passengers to return from their trips, Duane and I got a private tour of Passau. It has the kind of castle that is really a walled palace.
Can you read the date on this palace?
We couldn’t either……it is not 1999 nor is it 1099. The second digit is half of an eight, or a four. Who would have guessed.
Some pictures of the town, but first you need to know that the town is at the confluence of the Danube and the Nunn rivers. The Danube is by far the smaller of the two rivers, volume wise. When two rivers come together, the river with the longer length is the one whose name continues, not the one with the most volume. Ok, so now we know why the river continues as the Danube. What is very interesting is that during high water when both rivers are running high, the Nunn blocks the flow of the Danube and the Danube floods the town. This happens every year and some years it is lower and and some years it is catastrophic. It is so bad that the city has purchased the ground floor of most of the buildings and have rented them at a very low rate to shops. These shops have to clear out all their stock before high water and then muck out the property before they can reopen.
Here are some high water marks
