Stockholm, Sweden June 8

Stockholm is a huge city.  That said it also has an old town and lovely canals.

One unusual museum here is the Vasa Museum.  In August 1628, the “unsinkable” Royal Warship Vasa rolled over and sank on her maiden voyage, before even leaving Stockholm harbor.  The most expensive and perhaps most lavishly decorated naval vessel Sweden had ever built, King Gustavus Adolphus’ pride and joy was to be the mightiest naval ship.  Unfortunately, pride and a rush to get the ship afloat seems to have lead to the disaster.   The ship was top heavy with 30 canons and not enough ballast.  In 1956 she was rediscovered and finally brought to the surface in 1961.  Because she sank in brackish water (combination of salt water and fresh water) the organisms that destroy wood could not survive, so she was pretty much intact.  They built a building around the preserved ship.

Outside the museum, as we walked back to where we thought our “hop on/ hop off” boat landing was, we found 2 floating museums.  One is an ice breaker, the black one, and the other is a “Lighthouse” ship, the red one.  I never heard of a lighthouse ship either.  We went aboard and even climbed up to the lighthouse part, which was still working.  When that light goes on it gives off a lot of heat.

Before sonar, this underwater bell was used in addition to the light, to notify ships of danger.  The ships had to be equipped with equipment to hear the bell.                   IMG_0639 (1024x768)

This piece of art just had to be photographed…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  It was high school graduation day, so boats and trucks full of drunk celebrating kids were seen everywhere.

The old part of town was so crowded, we left quickly.   d (61) (1024x974)

Some other pictures you might enjoy.
